A Lion Puppet Craft – Based on the book, Dandelion by Don Freeman

This cute lion puppet craft includes a free printable lion template for you to download and print. The inspiration for this craft came from the children’s book, Dandelion by Don Freeman, a book about a lion who nobody recognizes.

Lion Puppet Craft ImageFor this craft you will be using brown and yellow construction paper to make a lion puppet that is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

For this craft you will need:

Directions

1. Download the Lion Face Template.pdf.

2. Print the Lion Face Template.pdf on yellow construction paper. Each page has two lion faces on it so you will only need half as many copies of the  Lion Face Template.pdf.

3. Cut the paper down the middle so there is one lion face on each half and one for each student.

4. Download and print the Lion Mane Template.pdf onto light brown construction paper.

5. Cut out the mane piece and snip carefully around the edge, towards the middle,  to create the look of fur.

6. Cut out the lion face and glue the face onto the mane.

7. Finally, tape a straw onto the back side to complete your lion puppet!

Every child will put their cat template together differently.  I love doing this activity with my kids because its so easy, and at the same time it reinforces cutting skills.  After we are done, I display each child’s work around the classroom.

Draw A Funky And Fun Clown House

Bubbles, Bozo, Balloons and Pies! A fun clown house to make that’s full of surprise!

For this silly clown house craft, a piece of paper is divided into sections and you can draw a different picture in each “room”. Use a ruler to draw lines to divide the paper or you can just fold the paper into even sections.

You will need markers, white copy paper, and a ruler
(optional) for this activity.

To make this clown house drawing, first fold a piece of paper into 4 or 6 sections.  You can also use a ruler to divide the paper into sections if you prefer.

Draw a different room in each section of your paper.  You can add a living and dining room, bathroom, closets, basement, laundry room, and bedroom to start.

Make sure to add lots of colors and clowns!  The trick to drawing clowns is give them big shoes and wild, colorful hair and outfits.  Use lots of polka-dots, swirls, and curly-Q’s when decorating their costumes.  You can make them look like they are wearing clown makeup but drawing x’s as their eyes, and a red dot as their noses.  I like to make them look like they are pouting, so I give them heart-shaped lips.

You can draw some stairs and add windows to make your drawing look more like a home.

Add more clowns, pets, robots, and anything else you can think of to make your drawing more colorful and interesting!

A Colorful Clown Craft

Here is a colorful clown craft that would be perfect for a costume party or school carnival-theme.  You can cut out the shapes ahead of time or let the kids cut out the shapes and assemble the clown themselves.

  • Foam shapes
  • Glue stick
  • Glue bottles
  • Sequins

clown craft for kindergarten

Directions

1.Cut out a white oval to make the face of the clown.

2. To make the wig, cut out small “cloud’ shapes of rainbow colors and glue them to the back of the white oval.

3.  Add facial features and face paint.

4. Create the clown’s shirt by cutting out a half oval.

5. To make the pants, cut out a rectangle and then cut a slim triangle from the bottom.

6.  Use the example above as a template for the clown shoes and gloves.

7.  Assemble the clown and paste onto a piece of construction paper. I used a piece of black construction paper in the example because I think it makes the colors pop but you can use whatever color you like!

8.  Decorate the clown’s costume with sequins and foam shapes.

You can also add balloons, a bag of tricks, or whatever other clown props you want!
